"Hello, I am asking for advice: whether the barrel crown is wearing out and every how many rounds it needs to be corrected? My rifles are ,308 Win. and 6,5 Creedmoor. Sorry for my bad English, because i am using google translator. I will be grateful for your response. Greetings from Poland"
A taka jest odp.:
"Hey Sebastian,
Much depends on the type of crown, cleaning techniques and products used and if you are using a suppressor, etc.
A sharp crown, 90 degs to the bore are the most easily damaged and worn. Damage from cleaning rods, brushes, bad fitting jags and just gas cutting, rounding the edge over from shooting all can take their toll.
I prefer to use a 60 deg piloted center reamer to just break the edge. Normally I will touch off and then advance .0015” to .002” so the cut will just barely cut the edge of the groove, this also give you a bit of a ramp as you bring rods back into the bore.
I’ve shot several World Records and won many matches over the 30 plus years I’ve been using this method.
If the rifles performance has fallen off I would inspect the crown and re-do as necessary.
When it comes to cleaning damage, the biggest thing I see is folks running a rod like they are cutting wood for the winter!!
SLOW DOWN, concentrate on keeping the rod straight and let the brush do its job. when you zip them through, the bristles will just fold down and don’t do anything. Yes I do use a brush. Depending on the product, either a good nylon or bronze brush. With Wipeout/Patchout or Copper solvents I use a nylon brush. With Butches Bore Shine or BoreTech products I use a good bronze brush.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, Mark Buettgen"
